The clash of former champions was won by the more recent champion
Casper Ruud who proved better against
Matteo Berrettini 4-6 7-6(4) 6-2.
It was a very interesting match and one certainly worthy of the final. Both of them played well heading into this matchup but initially, it was Berrettini who looked better. The Italian looked better throughout the event as well as his serve was a force. In the opening set Berrettini was the one that took advantage of his break points and it was enough for the 6-4 finish.
The 2nd set was a proper battle between the players that went into the tiebreak. Ruud played a bit better in the second set but he still faced break points. Berrettini had a chance to get the break in two separate games but he failed. On his own serve, Matteo did not allow a single break point and when he got the first mini-break in the tiebreak, it seemed like a done deal.
However it wasn't as Ruud came back with force to get the 3-1 lead which he held for the 7-4 finish. The final set was a tennis masterclass by Ruud who took apart Berrettini's game with a majestic performance to secure the 6-2 finish. For the 2nd year in a row, Ruud will be lifting the Gstaad trophy.
