Casper Ruud's
French Open campaign has shockingly come to an end against Nuno Borges as he was severely hampered with injury losing to the Portuguese ace 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0.
The two-time finalist came to Paris after winning the Madrid Open and won his first match in straight sets against Albert Ramos Vinolas. But Borges rallied from a set down.
Ruud took a medical timeout before losing a 6-0 fourth set. He reached the semi-finals of last year's tournament so will drop in the rankings as a result. He lost last year due to food poisoning and this year was hampered by injury.
While elsewhere Quentin Halys, Mariano Navone among others are through. Borges reward is a tie against Alexei Popyrin. He earlier saw off Alejandro Tabilo 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.
“I was fighting a lot, especially that first set, I felt like I was completely drilled,” said Borges. “He really played a huge intensity, and I wasn’t handling the situation the best. It was too much for me. Then I just kept on trying and noticed he started to slow down a little bit, and obviously he wasn’t 100 per cent today or I’m sure the result would not have been the same.
“I’m still proud of how I battled from the beginning until the end and gave myself a shot, and today I got lucky.”
