An unfortunate event disrupted
Alexander Zverev’s opening
match at the ongoing
Halle Open. The 28-year-old began his campaign in the
ongoing ATP event on Wednesday, where he defeated America's Marcos Giron in
straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-1.
According to a report published by the English
publication Daily Mirror, an advertising panel fell, which left a fan injured and
halted the proceedings. As soon as the incident occurred, Zverev, along with
the chair umpire, approached the spectator and offered her some ice. Tournament
director Ralf Weber was quoted in the report, where he ‘regretted’ the incident.
"Something like this has never happened in our 32-year tournament history.
We deeply regret the incident,” he said.
The report also stated that Weber visited the hospital
and offered the injured fan complimentary tickets for the next season. Event managers
Dr Udo Kleine and Uwe Greipel-Dominik also released the statements,
highlighting what went wrong on the day. Both individuals, in the statement,
apologised for the incident as well. "We suspect that the drumming against
the cushions caused screws to come loose,” they said. “This should not happen,
and we apologise. We will also check all other cushions and their fastenings
immediately after the Zverev match. The safety of our spectators is our top
priority."
Zverev will now face Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the round
of 16 clash on Thursday. Sonego registered his spot in the second round after
beating Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-2. This will
be the fifth meeting between the two players in professional tennis. In the
previous four meetings, Zverev had a clear advantage, winning on all four
occasions. Their last meeting took place last year in the same competition,
where Zverev emerged victorious in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 7-6.
