Judy Murray, mother of the former world number one Andy
Murray, has shared her thoughts about the prospect of her son returning to
coaching in the future. The 38-year-old, who is regarded as the greatest British
player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category, recently ended
his partnership with the former world number one, Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic.
Murray joined the 24-time Grand Slam winner as his coach late
last year in what turned out to be a not-so-successful project, which lasted just six months. The decision
was a surprising one considering the fact that the Glasgow-born retired from
the sport just months before accepting the offer to become the coach of Djokovic.
Murray’s mother, Judy, has recently spoken to Scottish
media outlet
The National, where she shared her thoughts about the prospect of
her son returning to coaching in the future. The 65-year-old was of the opinion
that the three-time Grand Slam winner did not want to get back into the world
of tennis so soon after retiring from the sport, but did that because Djokovic ‘asked’
him. Judy further went on to state that she is not aware of Murray’s desire to
return to coaching anytime soon, but she can see him in more of a ‘consultancy’ role.
“Andy had just retired and wasn't looking to go into
coaching but he stepped in because Novak asked him,” said Judy. “When they
joined-up, I was certainly interested to see how he got on being on the other
side of things and realising how stressful it can be. I don't think he's ready
to jump straight back into coaching, though, because the tennis circuit is
relentless. I can see him doing a consultant type role with young players and
he's already done a lot of mentoring with the British players on the men's side
who are coming through but I can't see him being a full-time tennis coach. There's
more to life than jumping straight back into the tennis rat race after nearly
20 years as a player. I don't think he'll necessarily want to jump back onto
that merry-go-round - not when you’re someone who’s got four kids to taxi
around and you want to get your golf handicap to scratch. Whether he does it in the future, I don't know
- that’s for him to answer and I actually don't think he knows the answer
either but my guess is not right now.”
