Chaotic at the worst of times, Corentin Moutet took it from that to sheer hilarity as he played in the Cordoba Open and had a remarkable sequence of events that truly baffled.
Moutet left supporters astounded as being beaten in the first round of the ATP 250 qualifying, he was beaten 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 by Mariano Navone. But it was Moutet who himself stole all the headlines perhaps for all the wrong reasons with a trio of truly baffling events.
First of all, Moutet decided instead of drinking water to order a 1.5l of Pepsi which raised eyebrows in itself as he downed it on camera and held it aloft like it was a trophy. He supposedly said it was a 'last resort' and that he was wanting to give up the full sugar beverage due to injury problems and of course fitness not being helped by consuming it.
Aside from the Pepsi plunge, he was pictured arguing with a member of the public during the game and looked unhappy during the confrontation. He then was set to have treatment from the physio but denied it. This after initially calling for it, but when they arrived, he refused to engage and refused all forms of treatment. Baffling from Moutet.
He wrote on X following the match. “Thought I was ready to compete but my body left me at 7/5 2/1… Tried everything to fight until the end but wasn’t enough. (Even tried the Pepsi thing that I didn’t drink for a year maybe). Still in the process to come back 100%. It takes time. But I practice good so my time will come for sure. Thanks for the support.”
