Cristian Garin completed a magical week at home in Santiago to win his 5th career trophy.
The Native Chilean is back into the top 20 after his Chile Open triumph and it was a performance he needed. The start of the season was very rough for him as he missed the Australian Open due to injury on top of battling COVID-19 earlier in the year. After the victory he said how he did not expect to win it:
“My biggest objective has always been to keep winning titles, but I was not expecting to win in Chile after the way we started the year. I always kept on training and staying positive, and I’m so happy that it’s paid off. Of course, I miss having a crowd especially while I’m playing at home, but I’m very pleased with this result.”
He played well all week long despite many doubting his form coming into the event. With every match, he grew more confident and his play got better. In the final against Bagnis, he overmatched his opponent despite a 2nd set resurgence by Bagnis. After the match Cristian explained it as:
“It was a really tough match. Finals are never easy… and in the second set, it was hard to concentrate. I played the tie-break too passively. But I deserved to win the third set because I had a lot of chances. I wasn’t able to be very aggressive and he played well in the big points, but I looked for my chances. I think the prize was for being there and staying consistent the whole match.”
