Daniil Medvedev had a shaky start in Rotterdam but he rallied in time to win the match in three sets 4-6 6-2 6-2 and advance to the next round.
Medvedev returned to Rotterdam in hopes of a good result but it didn't start off so well. The Russian has had problems at his event in the past and generally, his tennis hasn't looked that impressive in a while. The start was a bit wobbly by the Russian as he struggled to find a really good rhythm. Davidovih Fokina was doing a very good job of making things tough on him and it produced results.
The Spaniard took an early lead and held it until 4-2. He lost his serve to give Medvedev another chance but the Russian fumbled it and it was 3-5. Fokina then lost his serve once again but broke in the next game to finally take the first set. The response of Medvedev was furious in the second set as he quickly took a break and then the set 6-2.
The final set featured an early break by Medvedev as he took a 3-0 lead but he also gave his opponents a couple of chances to come back. In the end, it was a 6-2 finish for the Russian whose talent prevailed in the end. He had 9 aces and 16 winners. Fokina was not good overall as he had 39 unforced errors, clearly too much.
