It was another strong performance from Medvedev who overcame
Frances Tiafoe in straight sets for a place in the
Miami Open quarterfinal.
The match lasted 90 minutes and it saw
Daniil Medvedev defeat Frances Tiafoe 6-4 6-3. The top seed at the Miami Open booked a spot in the quarterfinal where he will face Roberto Bautista Agut. It was also the 3rd defeat for American players today with only Sebastian Korda left in the draw who will play Schwartzman very soon.
The match went largely as expected as Medvedev played well enough to hold his serve with ease. Tiafoe could barely string together several good rallies enough to carve out a break point. He did well enough of his own serve to hold off Medvedev until late in the set.
At 5-4, the Russian earned his 2nd break point which he converted clinching the opening set 6-4. In the 2nd serve Medvedev would have more issues, even losing his own serve early on but he pulled it back immediately to make it 2-2. He served very aggressively all day hitting 11 aces with 3 double faults.
His opponent did not hit a single ace which contributed to his defeat. At 3-2 for Medvedev, he also called a MTO for some issues he was experiencing but it did not help him much as used the opportunity to attack him even further breaking him at 4-3 to take a 5-3 lead.
He would quickly end it with 6-3 to complete a fairly good cramp-free match for him. He is through to the quarterfinal where a tough opponent in Bautista Agut awaits him.
