On a day that saw four Americans battle for a spot in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open, it was Sebastian Korda who remained standing following his upset victory over fifth-seeded Diego Schwartzman.
The NextGenATP star recorded his first Top 10 victory, as he withstood a comeback from the Argentine to prevail 6-3 4-6 7-5 after two and a half hours on court. The first set saw Korda dominate from the baseline, hitting 15 winners as he obtained the early break. The young American eventually clinched the first set after just 38 minutes, as the partisan crowd roared with approval.
Nonetheless, Schwartzman increased his intensity in the second set, as he broke the Florida native twice to level the score. However, it was the World No.9 who fell behind in the final set, before some inspired play saw him save a match point to keep the score even at 5-5. This did not deter Korda, who immediately broke again and served out the match to book his spot in his first ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal.
The 20-year old awaits the winner between fourth seed Andrey Rublev and 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic, who will be battling for their spot in the quarterfinal.
