It was a night of high quality tennis in Florida on Tuesday, as Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas both secured their spots in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open.
The fourth-seeded Rublev required just 80 minutes to dispatch of 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic in straight sets. The Russian never faced a break point, as he won 83% of his first serve points. Furthermore, he relentlessly attacked his opponent's second serve, winning a whooping 55% of return points.
Although each man hit six aces, it was Cilic who was undone by double faults, producing four of them at crucial points in the match. His Russian opponent only required one break point in each set to prevail with a 6-4 6-4 victory. Rublev will face in-form American Sebastian Korda, who stunned World No.9 Diego Schwartzman earlier in the day to book his quarterfinal spot.
World No.5 Stefanos Tsitsipas faced a more difficult task, as he battled Italian Lorenzo Sonego in the second match of the night session. The 2019 Nitto ATP Finals champion dominated the first set, securing two breaks to take it 6-2 after barely half an hour.
However, Sonego put up greater resistance in the second set, with neither man able to break the other. A tiebreak ensued, during which Tsitsipas's experience under pressure overcame the Italian's nerves. After grabbing a minibreak to lead 4-2, the Greek took control of the tiebreak, as he overpowered Sonego to escape with a 6-2 7-6(2) victory after an hour and a half.
The second seed will face Poland's Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinal, as the 26th seed overcame big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic in three sets during the day session.
