World no. 2
Daniil Medvedev is safely through into the Miami Open quarter-final, beating Frances Tiafoe 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 32 minutes to remain on the title course.
With these points, the Russian has passed the magical 10,000 points mark, becoming only the fifth player to achieve that since the ranking system change in 2009 after
Roger Federer,
Rafael Nadal,
Novak Djokovic and
Andy Murray! Since the last fall, Medvedev has been in great form, winning over 20 consecutive matches before Novak Djokovic halted him in the Australian Open final.
The Russian came to Miami with a 14-2 score in 2021, winning the ATP Cup for Russia with Andrey Rublev, losing that Australian Open title match and conquering Marseille for the season's first ATP singles crown.
A few weeks ago, Daniil became the fifth top-2 player since the summer of 2005 following four mentioned legends. He has now achieved another ranking milestone before Dominic Thiem and other rivals.
Medvedev controlled the pace against Tiafoe with 24 winners and 22 unforced errors, beating the American in the shortest and more extended exchanges to seal the deal in straight sets and advance into the quarters. Daniil is seeking his fourth Masters 1000 title and the second in a row after Paris last November.
