Daniil Medvedev ends dream run of Botic Van de Zandschulp at US Open, books place in semifinal

The start of the match went largely as one might have expected. Daniil Medvedev stood behind the baseline waiting to absorb the baseline play of Van de Zandschulp. At times he would launch a counter shifting the balance of the rally into his own favour. He broke Botic in the first game and later added another break before the Dutch play found some rhythm.

He pulled one of the breaks back but Medvedev quickly adjusted and closed out the set comfortable with 6-3. The 2nd set was utter domination by Medvedev who was everywhere on the court. Botic was not able to hit the ball as cleanly as he wanted to and Medvedev was able to cover the court with ease and lunch winners from the counterattack.

All of that contributed to Medvedev winning the set with 6-0 and it became clear that the match is slowly trending towards its inevitable conclusion. The 3rd set was an interesting one as it was Medvedev that struggled a bit early. Botic had an early break point but failed to use it. However, he would get one later and this time he was clinical.

The Dutch player served very well setting himself up for many easy points and it contributed to him controlling this set. Medvedev won his games with ease after that but he also failed to produce any pressure which sent the match into the 4th set. The 4th set was a very good one as Botic did not waver from his good play. Both of them actually played well and neither allowed a break point for the better part of the set.

At 5-4 Medvedev got his first of the set and it was also a match point. Botic held to make it 5-5 but one Medvedev would get more at 6-5 and this time he used it to close out the match. He will be glad to avoid going to a decider as Botic put up a respectable effort.
