World No.2 Daniil Medvedev has been silent regarding his Covid-19 vaccination status, but he may have signaled that he intends to compete at the 2022 Australian Open.
The reigning US Open champion has been reluctant to disclose whether he has received the Covid vaccine, and his participation was in doubt with Victoria Premier Dan Andrews insisting that only double vaxxed players will be allowed to take part in the season's first Grand Slam at Melbourne Park.
However, a few days after finishing runner-up at the Paris Masters, Medvedev sent out a tweet that all but guaranteed his participation.
"See you in January! ❤@AustralianOpen” tweeted the Russian.
This implies that Medvedev either is already fully vaxxed or plans on being so by the start of the Australian Open in January. Although there has been no concrete guidelines set for unvaccinated players at the event, Andrews has not budged on his stance.
“I’m not going to have people sitting in the grandstands having done the right thing, only to have millionaire players, who ought to be vaccinated, running around the place being essentially at such a higher risk of spreading this,” Andrews said.
“As far as the Australian Open goes, I’m not going to have unvaccinated people unable to buy a ticket while unvaccinated players move their way around Melbourne Park.”
