Group play for the 2021 WTA Finals commenced on Wednesday, with Karolina Pliskova rallying from a set down to defeat Garbine Muguruza in the Teotihuacan Group.
Pliskova dropped a close first set but fought back to prevail 4-6 6-2 7-6(6) and move to 1-0 in her Group. The Czech star now has a 9-2 career lead over Muguruza on the WTA circuit, with their last meeting occurring at the 2019 Australian Open.
After losing a first set that could have gone either way, Pliskova dominated in the second as she dictated play with her huge serve and precise groundstrokes. The deciding set saw the Wimbledon runner-up hit six double faults, which led to her being broken. However, she fought back to level the score, before edging out her Spanish opponent in a tight tiebreaker, securing victory after two hours and 26 minutes.
With one win under her belt, Pliskova has an improved chance of qualifying for the knock-out stage. Conversely, Muguruza will have to obtain good results against Annett Kontaveit and Barbora Krejcikova, the other two members of the Teotihuacan Group, if she hopes to advance to the semifinals.
