British tennis star
Emma Raducanu has responded to the comments made earlier this week by Eddie Jones, head coach of the England men's Rugby coach.
Jones was embroiled in controversy when he claimed that Raducanu was distracted by fame following her shocking title run at the US Open, an event she won as a qualifier.
"The big thing for young players is distractions," Jones said. "Distractions can be the exposure they get in the media, the praise and criticism they get, groups of agents who see this guy as the next big thing.
"There’s a reason why the girl who won the US Open hasn’t done so well afterwards. What have you seen her on? The front page of Vogue, the front page of Harper’s Bazaar, whatever it is, wearing Christian Dior clothes. All those distractions are out there."
Raducanu has had poor results following her unexpected win at Flushing Meadows, losing in her opening round match to Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu at the Upper Austria Ladies' Linz tournament this week. However, the 18-year old seemed unaffected when informed of Jones comments.
"I’m not really sure who or what that means," said Raducanu with a wide grin. "I haven’t followed any of the news. I stay away from that. So I’m sorry, I don’t really know what this is about."
The Brit suffered her third defeat in five matches since capturing the title in New York, but now plans to head off on holiday to enjoy a well-deserved break. Raducanu will then resume tennis activities with her new coach Torben Beltz, whose appointment was confirmed on Tuesday.
