Russia’s tennis star Daniil Medvedev has withdrawn from the Vienna Open. The ATP 500 event is set to be organised from October 21-24 in Vienna where some of the finest men’s tennis players will participate to showcase their talent and secure the ultimate prize.
However, last year's runner-up, Medvedev, has decided not to take part in the competition. It is not clear why the 28-year-old had made that decision but it is likely because of a shoulder injury which he suffered during the Shanghai Masters. In that competition, the current world number five lost to Italy’s Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinal in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-4.
After that match, Medvedev hinted that he might not be able in every event because of shoulder discomfort. “It started yesterday during the match,” he said back then. “But I thought it was nothing, and I still think, well, I still hope it's nothing serious, I'll have to do the checks tomorrow. “Let's see if I play them, especially the problems with the shoulder, the problems, well, this, they started yesterday.”
Interestingly, despite having shoulder discomfort, Medvedev went on to participate in the Six Kings Slam, where he participated in just one match and ended up earning a whopping sum of $1.5 million. He lost to Sinner in straight sets with a score of 6-0, 6-3. The Moscow-born star is not having a great 2024 season. He has won 45 out of 61 matches and suffered just 16 defeats in the process. However, despite that, he has not managed to win a single title this season. His most impressive outing this year came way back in January when he played in the final of the Australian Open. In that contest, he came second-best against the reigning world number one Italy’s Sinner in a five-set thrilling contest with a score of 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.
