Diego Schwartzman got shockingly beat by Belarussian junior player Daniil Ostapenkov 6-4 6-3 in the
Davis Cup tie between Argentina and Belarus.
Surprised in tennis do happen but when a junior player who never played a professional level match before defeats a top 20 ATP player with extensive experience that it becomes big news. That was what happened in a Davis Cup tie between Belarus and Argentina when Ostapenkov bested Schwartzman in straight sets.
The tie was played on clay which would have favoured Schwartzman against the majority of the tour but the junior put forward an excellent showing winning the match rather easily. He had a 4-1 lead in the 2nd set serving for 5-1 but Schwartzman was able to soften the scoreline a bit. The victory gave Belarus the 1-0 lead against Argentina.
Perhaps this is the beginning of another teen phenom in the world of tennis. There has been plenty of success for teenagers in the past year and perhaps Ostapenkov will soon be a household name. Either way, a huge win for the young player who will get a lot of confidence from it.
