The 2023 Canadian Open couldn't have started better for Alexander Davidovich Fokina, who got rid of J.J. Wolf, world number 43, with a resounding 6-0, 6-2 score.
The numbers do not lie and the Andalusian has been superior to the American in all aspects of the game. He closed the first set with a bagel and in the second, he was losing 1-2 but won the next 5 games in a row to put the finishing touch to his exhibition with a 6-2.
After good recent form for Wolf, this was a shock defeat but one that will delight Davidovich Fokina no doubt.
In the second round he will face a very tough match no matter who he faces, as his possible opponents are: Alexander Zverev, who is returning to his best level, winning the Hamburg ATP 500 just over 1 week ago; or Tallon Griekspoor, who comes from being finalist of the DC Open, eliminating in semifinals the number 1 seed and local favorite, Taylor Fritz.
The duel between the German and the Dutchman will be played tomorrow, and there we will know who Davidovich Fokina will face in the second round of the Canadian Masters 1000.
