A surprise in the Davis Cup qualifiers as Czechia came back to win the series against the USA and claim a spot in the Finals. Despite starting the day with a loss in doubles, Jiri Lehecka victory over Taylor Fritz brought hope back to the Europeans, who closed out the day with a spectacular Jakub Mensik dominating world No. 29 Frances Tiafoe. This ended the USA's Davis Cup 2025 aspirations, as they failed to qualify for Bologna.
With this, Czechia once again qualifies for the Davis Cup Finals, showcasing their great generation of players, with three of their stars in the top 25 and as strong contenders to fight for the title. They join hosts Italy and the already-qualified Argentina, Austria, France, and Germany. Only two spots remain, which will be decided between Spain–Denmark (0-2) and Australia–Belgium (0-2).

USA and Czechia tied 1-1 after day 1 battle

On the first day, things started in the best way for the Czechs, who had an inspired Jiří Lehecka (No. 16) defeat Frances Tiafoe (No. 29). Tiafoe took the role of the second singles player after Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul withdrew from the Davis Cup team due to injuries. The Czech player swept past his opponent without conceding a single break point throughout the match, closing out an easy 6-3, 6-2 victory.
In the second match, Taylor Fritz took on the responsibility of preventing the Europeans from getting too far ahead in the tie. He overcame a tough match against the 2025 Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik (No. 17) with a score of 6-4, 6-3. The American—a recent US Open quarterfinalist—fought a good battle and was better on the important points, saving three of five break points against him and converting five of thirteen of his own. The 6-4, 6-3 victory tied the contest at the end of the first day, leaving both teams with big ambitions for the second day.

American doubles specialists win in tight three-setter

In doubles, the Americans had the primary responsibility, with specialists and former doubles world No. 1s Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek, both called up at the last minute following the absences of Paul and Shelton. The strategy paid off against the Czech doubles pair of Mensik and Tomas Machac, a mixed doubles gold medalist at the 2024 Tokyo Olympics. It was a close duel where the Americans stepped on the gas in the final part of the match, winning the last three games consecutively to seal a crucial 7-6(6), 5-7, 6-4 victory for the American team.

Lehecka stuns Fritz to tie series

Fritz took to the court with the possibility of closing out the series against a formidable Lehecka. The Czech had taken on the responsibility of being the Czech No. 1 and was coming off a convincing victory against Tiafoe, in addition to a remarkable performance at the US Open a week ago, where he reached his second Grand Slam quarterfinal.
In the first set, the Czech was the first to get a break in the third game, and he then held on to his serve to stay ahead. The pressure from the home crowd wasn't enough to make Lehecka nervous, and he even saved three break points before taking the set 6-4.
Fritz didn't lose focus, and at the start of the second set, he was the one to take the advantage, securing his first break in the second game and then saving four break points against him to go up 3-0. The American never felt comfortable with his serve, but he managed to save several break points and win the set 6-3.
The joy for the American grew even more when he started the third set with a break. He was just a few service holds away from giving the USA the series, but the European quickly broke back. Fritz didn't lose his calm and maintained solid service games, creating several break opportunities, but he couldn't convert them. At the moment of greatest pressure, with Fritz serving at 4-5, the Czech knew how to handle the momentum better, getting the break to close out the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, giving the victory to the Czech Republic and tying the series at 2-2. Tiafoe and Mensik would have to go out and decide who advances to the Finals.

Mensik delivers the knockout blow

Frances Tiafoe had to step onto the court with the responsibility of securing a win against a Czech team that had regained its momentum after Lehečka's victory. The American had only one win in his six Davis Cup appearances so far, and the nerves were palpable from the start against the 20-year-old Czech star. Mensik won the first 12 points of the match consecutively and went up 3-0 without any trouble.
Tiafoe managed to save three break points in the fourth game to narrow the gap, but it was all for nothing against a determined Mensik, who never let go of his control of the match. While "Big Foe" managed to limit his unforced errors, the Czech player dominated him for the rest of the set, getting another break and closing out a remarkable set 6-1 in just 26 minutes. Mensik conceded only four points on his serve in the entire set.
He then concluded it in the second 6-4 to send USA home. Their strong team not able to deliver a Davis Cup Finals spot.
