Alex De Minaur became the latest player to test positive for the Coronavirus ending his dream of representing Australia at the Olympic Games.
De Minaur became on of several tennis players that tested positive for the Coronavirus after attending Wimbledon in London. He joins Johanna Konta and Dan Evans as the 3rd player who is forced to withdraw from the Olympics after testing positive for the virus.
Hours after the news broke De Mianur posted a message on his official Instagram page writing:
"I am so disappointed to have to miss the upcoming Tokyo Olympics after having tested positive for COVID-19 this week, just a few days before I was scheduled to depart. I was really looking forward to representing Australia and being part of the team in Tokyo. I will support the entire delegation now from home, and can’t wait to have the opportunity to wear the Green and Gold in Paris in 2024. I will be back!!"
It's a big hit for the Australian tennis team for Tokyo who is now without their two best players in De Minaur and Kyrgios. Kyrgios declined participation after learning there won't be any fans in attendance.
Australian Olympics Commitee spokesman, Ian Chesterman said:
“It’s been a dream since he was a child to represent Australia at the Olympic Games, but he has sent his very best wishes for the rest of the team.”
