The United Cup is one of the youngest tennis tournaments on the circuit. This competition, in force since 2023, has some particularities in its format, such as the fact that it is mixed, in addition to the fact that the type of competition is by countries although WTA and ATP points are distributed among the participants.
The 2025 season is already underway following the start of the United Cup, the event that brings together male and female tennis players to compete on behalf of their countries.
The third edition of the event that debuted in 2023 as a joint initiative between the WTA, ATP and Tennis Australia features great players in the draw, such as Americans Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff, or former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek alongside the talented Hubert Hurkacz.
The United Cup came to replace the ATP Cup, and is often confused with the old Hopman Cup, because it takes many features of that competition, which also used to be held at the beginning of the season and was also a team competition.
The tournament is held in three Australian cities: Brisbane, Perth and Sydney, before culminating with the final in Sydney. The format combines men's and women's singles matches, plus a mixed doubles that frequently defines the series. Each national showdown consists of three matches, with the top teams from each group advancing to the knockout stage.
In the first edition, the U.S. team, led by Jessica Pegula, Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz, won the championship by defeating Italy in a convincing manner.
For 2024 the Germans surprised everyone behind an Alexander Zverev at the highest level. The current No. 2 was key for his country, overcoming two match points against Hubert Hurkacz in a dramatic match. Finally, the duo of Zverev and Laura Siegemund would secure victory in the mixed doubles match against Poland.
Despite having only 2 editions in its history, the United Cup has managed to attract the best players of both circuits, offering juicy financial prizes for the protagonists, and for the fans, the opportunity to see men and women competing together to take the trophy to their country. Who will be the next winners?
