Grigor Dimitrov completed the semifinal lineup at the 2021 San Diego Open, overcoming Aslan Karatsev in a tricky encounter on Friday night.
The former World No.3 stifled a Karatsev comeback, prevailing 6-1 1-6 6-2 in a match that saw many shifts in momentum. Dimitrov breezed through the first set after just half an hour, employing his speed and athleticism to confound his opponent.
However, there was a reverse of fortunes in the second set as Karatsev seemed to have all the momentum, with his Bulgarian opponent looking out of sorts. Dimitrov was unable to develop a rhythm, hitting six double faults in the process. With the second set out of reach, it came down to a decider.
The final set saw Dimitrov grab an early break to lead 3-1, only to be broken immediately by the crafty Russian. This was short-lived, as Karatsev was unable to capitalize on his momentum, losing serve almost immediately before being broken a second time and ultimately handing the World No.29 the match.
Awaiting Dimitrov in the semifinals is Casper Ruud, as the second seed cruised past Lorenzo Sonego in the night session's first quarterfinal.
