Grigor Dimitrov had no issues against Barrere while Shapovalov survived a late match surge from Simon to reach the 2nd round of Roland Garros.
Grigor Dimitrov returned to the Roland Garros in spectacular fashion as he lessened the main draw of yet another Frenchman as did Shapovalov who won against Simon. Gregoire Barrere was a good youngster whose career never fully translated to the pros and his performance today was far from good which the Bulgarian was thankful for. He controlled the match from the start winning the 1st set with 6-3. He was even more impressive in the next winning it with 6-2 before ending the match with another 6-2 set victory.
Dimitrov didn't serve as well as he can hitting only 3 aces compared to 7 double faults. His winner and unforced errors columns were eerily similar to than of Barrere but he beat him with patience and baseline play. The Frenchman could not match his composure from the baseline often being outplayed before committing a forced error.
Denis Shapovalov entered the Roland Garros with great expectations as his play was looking better and better in the previous weeks. His opponent was Gilles Simon a tough out even in 2020. He proved just that with a late surge that got the Shapo fans worried but the Canadian withstood it. He came out strong winning the first set 6-2. The next one was a proper struggle as he was down 0-3 then 2-5 before going on a 5 game winning streak to win the set 7-5.
Simon was the one who was down in the 3rd set before fighting back and even winning the set 7-5. A similar surge almost happened late in the 4th set but Shapovalov was careful not to make the mistake he did in the previous set and he closed it out with 6-3.
