FINAL BOUND 🥶 @GrigorDimitrov defeats Fritz 3-6 7-5 7-6 and reaches his first final since Rotterdam 2018 🤯 @genevaopen #atpgva
Taylor Fritz was up a set and a break but he threw it all away allowing Dimitrov to mount a comeback which finished with the Bulgarian winning the match 3-6 7-5 7-6(2).
Taylor Fritz has played a terrible clay season so far but he found some inspiration in Geneva with a couple of wins. Today looked like a day which would see him advance to the final of the event, especially after he went up a break in the second set after winning the first set. However, he allowed Dimitrov to crawl back into the match and that proved very costly.
The first set was a solid one by Fritz as he dominated the rallies against a very unsure Dimitrov. The Bulgarian struggled with his serve giving Fritz plenty of looks on his second serve and it proved his undoing. He could only save 5 of 7 break points he saved with Fritz taking the set 6-3. The second set followed a similar pattern as the American took a 4-2 lead.
Opting to risk more with his play, Dimitrov was able to break back and make it 4-4, after which he kept applying pressure ultimately taking away the second set 7-5. That good player continued in the final set as he took an early 2-0 lead but threw it away not long after that. From there it was a rather competitive match with both players holding their serve.
The itbereak ultimately ended up with Dimitrov taking it 7-2. Another bad loss for Fritz ahead of Roland Garros.
