Novak Djokovic was forced to overcome a hindered Holger Rune and boos from the crowd on Tuesday night, as he kicked off his 2021 US Open campaign.
In search for not only his 21st Grand Slam singles title but also a calendar Grand Slam, the top seed swept past his Danish opponent in a 6-1 6-7(5) 6-2 6-1 victory. After easily dominating in the first set, a revitalized Rune grabbed an early break, much to the delight of the crowd. In fact, the fans present seemed to be rooting for the World No.145, as they showered him with support while several openly booed Djokovic. This might have played a part in Rune keeping up with the Serbian, eventually prevailing in a second set tiebreak to level the score.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck for the 18-year old as he began to suffer from leg cramps in the third set. This led to him taking a medical timeout, who provided little relief as he was picked apart by the World No.1.
With Djokovic finally hitting his stride and Rune pondering retirement due to the incessant cramping, there was little doubt regarding the outcome. To his credit, the Danish teenager played through the pain, and was able to salvage a game in the final set. However, it all came to an end as Djokovic quickly ended matters, booking his spot in the second round and keeping his hopes of a calendar Grand Slam alive.
