World No.1 Novak Djokovic looks to be in mid-season form as he eased past Damir Dzumhur in the first round of the US Open.
The Serbian improved to a 24-0 record for the 2020 season, as he brushed past Dzumhur 6-1 6-4 6-1 in just under two hours. Following
his victory at the recently concluded
Western & Southern Open, there was talk of the 33-year old experiencing fatigue prior to his opening round match. However, he showed no such signs as he made quick work of his Bosnian opponent.
Djokovic obtained a double break in the opening set, racing to a 4-0 lead. Dzumhur was able to win his first game to prevent a bagel at 0-5, but the top seed quickly served out the set. After an exchange of breaks in the second set, both men were level at 4-4. However, the World No.1's relentless pressure paid off, as he broke Dzumhur and then closed out the second set.
The third set proved to be a mere formality, as Dzumhur was faced with the daunting task of coming back from two sets down against the most in-form player in the world. Djokovic quickly obtained the early break, with Dzumhur struggling to hold his subsequent service game. The World No.1 then raced away with the final set, clinching the match to kick off his
US Open campaign in dominant fashion.
Djokovic will next face Great Britain's
Kyle Edmund, who defeated
Alexander Bublik 2-6 7-5 7-5 6-0 to advance to the second round.
Goffin overcomes giant hurdle
Seventh seed
David Goffin had the unenviable task of facing American
Reilly Opelka to kick off his US Open campaign. The Belgian was able to cut down his towering opponent, prevailing 7-6(2) 3-6 6-1 6-4. Goffin relied on his incredible return of serve, breaking Opelka on four occasions. His amazing defensive play frustrated the American, who committed a whooping 57 unforced errors to Goffin's 19. The Belgian will face South African Lloyd Harris, who defeated Marco Cecchinato 6-4 7-5 6-2 to reach the second round.
