Novak Djokovic is through to the QF of Roland Garros after Lorenzo Musetti was forced to retire down 0-4 in the fifth set.
It was a truly remarkable 4th match between Novak Djokovic and Lorenzo Musetti as we saw two great sets of play at the start but also an injury and a retirement later on. Musetti was handling the pressure of the big stages fairly well taking a 2-0 lead over Novak Djokovic 7-6(7) 7-6(2). It was a great display of courage and calmness from Musetti who fought back 1-4 in the tiebreak to win 9-7.
He also trailed Djokovic early in the match 1-3. In the 2nd set, he showed even more composure by winning the tiebreak 7-2. Musetti is yet to lose a tiebreak on ATP level. However, things changed in the 3rd set and they changed quickly. Musetti lacked the burst he had in two previous sets and his movement was way slower.
Djokovic continued applying the pressure as he did in the previous two sets but the Italian simply could not counter it like he used two. His positioning was thrown off because of his movement and he committed a lot more errors than he usually did. Djokovic lost only 10 points in the 3rd set which he won with 6-1.
Things got worse for Musetti in the 4th as he lost 0-6 in only 19 minutes. Djokovic only dropped 4 points in that set. Before the 5th set started we saw a MTO for Musetti but it did not help. His trouble moving was still present and he decided to retire down 0-4 in the fifth set.
