Dominic
Thiem advanced through the qualifying rounds at the Paris Masters and became
the 12th ATP tennis player to reach $30 million in career prize money.
The former
US Open champion had an early exit from the ATP 500 Vienna Open, losing to
Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6, 6-4 in the tournament's first round. This week, Dominic
Thiem made it to the qualifiers of the Paris Open with two impressive victories
over Lorenzo Sonego (6th seed) and Christopher O'Connell (12th seed).
As a
result, the Austrian secured a prize money of $24,498, which pushed his career
earnings to a total of $30,003,212. Thiem is the 8th tennis player to surpass
this milestone and the 7th in career earnings among active players.
The list is
led by Novak Djokovic, who has earned over $175 million, followed by Rafael
Nadal with $134 million. Other active players on the list include Andy Murray
($64 million), Alexander Zverev ($36 million), Stan Wawrinka ($36 million),
Daniil Medvedev ($34 million), and Marin Cilic ($31 million). Former
tennis legends like Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, David Ferrer, and Andre Agassi
also surpass Thiem in terms of their total earnings.
At 30 years
old, Thiem has faced some challenges recently and has hovered around the top
100 rankings, without significant results that would propel him back into the
top titles contention. Nevertheless, Thiem managed to earn $720,322 this season
and still could add more earnings if he progresses in the Paris Masters, which
is the final tournament he will compete in.
In the
first round of the Paris Masters, he was drawn to face Stan Wawrinka, a 3-time
Grand Slam champion, with whom he has met four times, with three of those
encounters resulting in victories for "Stan the Man." The two players
previously faced each other in the same tournament in 2014, with Wawrinka
securing a 6-4, 7-6(6) victory.
