Dominic Thiem is still struggling with tennis as he was taken down by Marco Cecchinato a player who barely beat anybody in the two years 3-6 4-6.
The Austrian player arrived in Geneva in hopes of getting some matches in ahead of the French Open but he suffered yet another defeat. Thiem has not won a single match since returning from injury and that's a big concern for Thiem who simply can't produce a high level of tennis no matter what he tries. It was especially bleak today against Cecchinato who did play well to be fair.
The Italian trouble Thiem with a combination of good serves and good drop shots. He occasionally hit a couple of forehand and backhand winners as Thiem struggled with consistency. Thiem himself failed to produce a high level and that was a problem.
In the first set, he did not create many chances and even when he did, he failed to convert them. He lost his serve as he failed to save the two break points he faced while he did not use the two he had. The 2nd set was quite similar. Thiem played a bit better in the 2nd set but once again he failed to convert his chances. How bad this defeat proves the fact that this was Cecchinato's first ATP win of the season. Yikes.
