Dominic Thiem crashes out against Hanfmann in Kitzbuhel

Dominic Thiem had hopes of winning the tennis event in Kitzbuhel because he had a great draw and chance however Yannick Hanfmann spoiled that plan.

The German proved better in three sets 6-4 3-6 6-4 to advance to the semifinal of the event that Thiem won in 2019. The disappointment was huge for the Austrian who did not have that much luck in this one. He didn't play his best as he's still working his way towards his best but he played well enough to win. Hanfmann did too as the German can be tricky to deal with on clay.

He's been playing well this week and today he was a bit luckier than Thiem. The first set was a close one but Thiem squandered many opportunities. He had 3 break points and failed to use either of those while Hanfmann converted his only one. That was enough for the 6-4 opening set win.

The 2nd set was much better by Thiem who served a bit better and made things easier. He dropped only a handful of points on his serve and won the second set 6-3. Hanfmann was once again pretty good on break points saving four of five but it was not enough as Thiem converted one of them. The final set was a close one.

Hanfmann was the better player overall and got the win however both had chances. The crucial thing happened late in the set when the rain started to fall. Hanfmann just barely held for 5-4 and upon return an hour later he broke Thiem for the 6-4 finish. Very unlucky timing of the rain for Thiem.
