Tennis star Leylah Fernandez will not be making her return to the WTA circuit next week, as she has withdrawn from the Citi Open Washington event.

The Canadian superstar suffered a foot injury at this year's Roland Garros, fracturing her foot in a quarterfinal encounter against Italian Martina Trevisan. Fernandez has been out of action since that event, missing the entire grass-court season in the process.

The 19-year old was hoping to make her return at this summer's Citi Open, but has not been cleared to compete by her medical team. Additionally, Fernandez was scheduled to participate in an exhibition match against Coco Gauff at the Atlanta Open this past weekend, but was replaced by American Taylor Townsend.

"Hey, guys. So I just wanted to give you a quick update," said Fernandez in a video message on social media. "While my foot is recovering, I am following my doctor's orders, which are that I will not be able to compete for the next coming week.

So, I'm very, very sad to say that I will not be in Atlanta. And even though it's heartbreaking for me, I hope that everyone — the fans and the players — will enjoy their time at the tournament and I want to wish Coco good luck.

Bye. See you next time."

The 2021 US Open runner-up is hoping to be ready in time for the US Open, which kicks off at the end of August.
