Dominic Thiem won his only grand slam title at the US Open in 2020 defeating Alexander Zverev in the final.
The 2020 US Open was a fascinating event that saw some amazing things happen such as Dominic Thiem winning his first and only Grand Slam title so far. We also saw some bizarre things happen such as the Djokovic defaulting which played a huge part in Thiem winning the title. Many have called his US Open win devalued as he did not face any of the big three.
Djokovic got defaulted from the event, Federer was injured and Nadal opted not to travel to the US because of the pandemic. Now the Austrian fired back at the critics by saying:
“Nobody knows if I would have won it, but, well, I have the title and that’s all that counts. Of course, the Big Three is the Big Three but there was also a time before them and nobody asks if Grand Slam titles were worth more or less back then and the same applies now."
Thiem makes a strong point here and he is right. There was tennis before the Big 3 and will be after the Big 3 and nobody questions Federer's French Open win when Soderling took care of the Nadal problem.
The Austrian followed it up with:
“A Grand Slam title is always worth the same, so there is really no need to even think about it. After all, my name is on the trophy and it always will be. It doesn’t really matter who I beat and who was or wasn’t there.”
