Just a day after finally getting a win, Dominic Thiem suffered yet another terrible loss, losing to challenger player Varillas in two sets 4-6 4-6 in Buenos Aires.
Thiem hoped to find his rhythm on clay where he had the most success in his career but his joy didn't last long. He won one match beating the very solid Molcan in two sets but now suffered a bad loss after simply playing not well enough. Varillas is a good clay player, he's capable of winning matches but he's not a player that somebody who aspires to be in the top 20 should lose to, even on clay.
Neither player served that well today but Varillas played far better in rallies. He surprised Thiem with his aggressive approach and the Austrian could do very little outside of watching his opponent cruise to a 6-4 finish. The second set opened okay for Thiem as he won his first service game but the break came not long after.
Unlike the first set, Thiem did not manage to break his opponent in the second set as Varillas controlled the match really well. He did create a break chance in the final game of the match but once again failed to play as well as he needed to in order to turn around the match. Just a bad performance overall.
