Pure domi-nation 💯 @domithiem flies past Sousa 6-2 6-0 to progress at the #GijonOpen
Dominic Thiem did not play too many great matches lately but this one was a great one as he thrashed Joao Sousa 6-2 6-0 to move on in Gijon.
Thiem is slowly making his way back to the top of tennis and that's why accepted a wild card entry into this event. Judging by his first-round performance, the Austrian made the right choice. He faced a solid Sousa but a player who is far removed from his best and it showed.
Fairly early, Thiem established control breaking his opponent to take a 3-1 lead. He kept applying pressure and added another break later on to cruise to a 6-2 opening set finish. He dropped only four points behind his serve and demolished Sousa on his second in the opening set.
It seemed like things could not get any better but they did as he served up a bagel for Sousa winning the second set in only 28 minutes. Once again he dominated on his own serve while smashing Sousa on his as well. A very quick 62-minute performance for Thiem who moves on in Gijon.
