Andy Roddick has heaped praise on how Taylor Fritz goes about his business while not being widely lauded by the tennis public. The former US Open champion was left impressed with him at the Laver Cup and felt he didn't get enough credit.
Fritz became the first person since Andy Roddick in 2009 to reach the final of a major when he did so at the 2024 US Open. He was well beaten by Jannik Sinner in the final.
Almost two weeks later, he was back in action anchoring Team World at the Laver Cup and he was superb. He lost in the Laver Cup decider to Alcaraz but he ended up being the leading light throughout for Team World. This didn't go unnoticed in the camp of Roddick.
“One other guy I was really impressed with was one Fritz getting back in there after the US Open disappointment, he deserves credit,” Roddick said. “Even fought back from a break down in that second set against Carlos when he was being completely outplayed.”
“I'm more and more impressed with Fritz. I don't think we give him enough credit, as just, the lunch-pail guy, he shows up every day and does his job. Like you never think of him, having an off-day, giving less than his best effort, playing without a sense of belief, mailing it in. I just have a lot of respect for the way Fritz goes about it.”
