Novak Djokovic has addressed the concerns
regarding the potential overlap of the
Wimbledon final with the Euro final
between Spain and England. The 7-time champion will be seeking his eighth title
on Sunday, July 14, against
Carlos Alcaraz, the same day as the Euro final.
The world No. 2 defeated
Lorenzo Musetti in
straight sets, securing a rematch of the 2023 final against Alcaraz, who
overcame
Daniil Medvedev in four sets. Djokovic aims to avenge last year's loss
and claim his 25th Grand Slam title and eighth at SW19.
Djokovic unfazed by Wimbledon and Euro final clash
Without a doubt, it will be an ideal final
between the defending champion and the 7-time champion, a repeat of the 2023
showdown. Last year, Alcaraz and Djokovic delivered a spectacle, with the young
Spaniard winning the trophy in a 5-set thriller after 4 hours and 43 minutes,
one of the most memorable finals in recent times.
The possibility of the final being a long match
again concerns some fans, given that the Wimbledon final is scheduled for 2:00
PM London time, while the Euro final in Berlin will start at 8:00 PM London
time, with England seeking their first European title against Spain.
However, Djokovic expressed that he is not
worried about a potential overlap of both matches. According to the Serbian,
the local audience will have enough time to enjoy both finals: “I think that
the English crowd will have the best of both worlds because I think the finals
is at night, so we are starting I think at 2 PM, so they'll have plenty of time
to enjoy the tennis and football as well."
Djokovic and Alcaraz in the 2023 Wimbledon final
“I think the Wimbledon finals is probably the
most-watched tennis match of the entire year in the world. So not only England,
but I'm sure that a lot of people around the world will follow it. It adds
more, I guess, to the importance of the match.”
Djokovic also compared Alcaraz to himself,
highlighting the 20-year-old Spaniard's adaptability: “I see a lot of
similarities between me and him in terms of the ability to adapt and adjust to
the surface. I think that's probably his biggest trait, is that he's got skills
to play equally well on any surface and to adapt to a given opponent that
particular day.
“So he's a very all-around player, very
complete player. Impressive what he has done for such a young age. I said on
the court, which I think probably all of us share the same opinion, that he's
going to win many slams in his career,” Novak Djokovic added.“Hope he's going
to give me this one in two days, and let's see (smiling). After that I'll cheer
for him.”
