The Russian player is a known competitor who desperately wants to win every match he plays. He does not mind being booed, he does not mind the crowd cheering against him and he even enjoys that using it as a fuel. That has found him both admirers and those who don't like it on the Tour but the Russian is keeping true to himself.
Asked about it he used the example of Federer and Nadal to explain:
"In the past years we had Roger and Rafa who are two of the fairest sportsmen ever."
The popularity of Novak Djokovic lacks compared to those two for a similar reason, as Djokovic was always outspoken on many things never missing the opportunity to say what he truly thinks. Both Federer and Nadal have been more diplomatic over the years taking a careful and measured approach.
Medvedev experienced a similar thing as he continued:
"Now when somebody in tennis is not like this, people tend to not like them and say, 'How come you're not like Roger and Rafa?' Guess what, everybody is different!"
It's a fair point by Medvedev who does not seem like a person who will ever change the way he plays or does things. So far it's worked out well for him but it remains to be seen how far it will take him. Today he will have a chance to lead Russia to the Davis Cup trophy.
