It is that time of year when the focus will shift towards the Laver Cup. The mega-competition will be played from September 20-22 in Berlin, where some of the top players in the world will participate in a two-team competition. The competition will feature Team Europe and Team World. In Team Europe, there will be three major stars missing — Italy’s Jannik Sinner, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic and Spain’s Rafael Nadal. The reigning world number one in men’s tennis in the singles category decided to rule himself out of the mega-event months ago to focus on other competitions.
Just like him, Serbia’s legendary tennis star Djokovic, who is regarded as the greatest player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category, having won as many as 24 Grand Slam titles, decided to withdraw from the competition months back to focus on other events. Another big-name player, Nadal, has also been ruled out of the competition because of a lack of match fitness. He announced his withdrawal from the competition last Thursday in a detailed statement.
"Right now, I'm not in a position to win anything," he said while talking to Eurosport. "I said that I would play until the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and then we would see, and I am in that time of rest. Mentally, I am well. Zero problems physically too. I'm at home enjoying other things and training what I can daily. These are the decisions that are being made and it was a possibility. I haven't competed for a while... I need to do what’s best for them and at this moment there are other players who can help the team deliver the win.”
Despite their absence, Team Europe will consist of a host of superstars, including the likes of Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, Germany’s Alexander Zverev, Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, Norway’s Casper Ruud, Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov, Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas, Italy’s Flavio Cobolli and Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff. On the other hand, Team World will consist of America’s Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo, Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo and Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis.
