The 2024 Laver Cup kicks off on September 20, and American Taylor Fritz is ready to lead Team World to glory following a heartbreaking loss at the 2024 US Open final.
The World No.7 reached his first Grand Slam final two weeks ago at Flushing Meadows, where he fell to Italian superstar Jannik Sinner in straight sets. Despite being overcome with emotion from losing at his home Slam, Fritz claims to be refreshed and ready to take on the best Team Europe has to offer at the seventh edition of the Laver Cup.
The 26-year old Californian defeated the likes of German Alexander Zverev and Norwegian Casper Ruud en route to the final in New York, both of whom have reached multiple Grand Slam finals in the past. There is the potential for a rematch against both opponents, as the European duo are set to represent Team Europe at this weekend's Laver Cup.
Fritz admitted to allowing himself a few days to rest before resuming practice for the Laver Cup. The top-ranked American is of the opinion that he was not at his best during his US Open run, and has worked on some areas of improvement.
"The main thing I take from the whole US Open experience is that I don’t necessarily think I played incredible tennis to get to the final,” said Fritz. “I’ve had a couple of days’ good practice in Miami. Mike [Russell, his coach] and I talked a bit about the next steps, things I need to work on, and trying to take some positives, even though I was disappointed with the final. I played very within myself, so it was a huge positive that I could get to that point not playing amazing tennis.
“After the US Open it’s natural there’s a bit of a comedown, playing your home Slam, so it’s great to come here, with the guarantee you’ll get some matches against some really good players. You’re always going to be fired up, because you’re playing in a team setting.”
Fritz will team with compatriot Ben Shelton to take on the team of Zverev and former World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz, as the Americans hope to secure a three-peat for Team World at the event after capturing the title on the last two occasions.
"We’ve been trying to play together for a while,” said Fritz on his partnership with Shelton. “I’ve always thought we’d make a good team, so I think it’s exciting to finally get our first go.”
