A battle between veterans at the
Rome Open was won by
Fabio Fognini as he defeated
Andy Murray 6-4 4-6 6-4 in a very vintage performance in front of his fans.
Fognini has not been playing that well this year though he had some decent moments. This might be the highlight of his season as he certainly played one of his better matches in recent memory taking down Andy Murray in three sets. It was very much an odd match because Fognini was playing really well at times and Murray wasn't.
The Italian won the first set which was a pretty good one from him even though he couldn't exert too much pressure on Murray's serve most of the time. The second one saw him fall behind 1-5 early on after completely losing his focus but he stormed back saving multiple set points to make it 4-5.
When he needed to serve and make it 5-5, Fognini lost his serve and the set. He opened the final one with an early break and held it rather comfortably for a good win. 7 aces and 47 winners total for the Italian which was significantly more than Murray who had only 27 winners.
