Former Italian number one
Fabio Fognini has decided to
withdraw from Italy’s upcoming
Davis Cup qualifier against Slovakia due
to a calf injury.
World number 38 Fognini explained his omission from the team, stating
that he picked up the injury whilst playing in the Rio Open
quarter-finals last month. He posted on Twitter:
”Hi everyone, I
want to update you regarding my physical condition after the trip to
South America. During the quarter-final I pulled my calf and, once back
to Italy, I underwent many checks to understand the origin of the
problem and to proceed with the required treatments. My doctors have
told me I need to rest not to make my calf worse. Because of this, I
won’t be able to play for Italy in the next Davis Cup match in
Slovakia.”
Although forced to withdraw from the Italian team, he still wished
the team the best of luck:
”I’m sad because the national team has always
been a priority to me. I wish the best of luck to the Davis Team. Go
Italy!”
Despite missing Fognini and Berrettini the Italians will have a very strong team in place headlined by Sinner, Sonego and Musetti.
