Roger Federer defeated Matteo Berrettini 7-6 and 6-3 in his second match at the 2019 Nitto ATP Finals in London, recording his 58th victory at the ATP Finals.
It was a very important match for Federer as he needed to defeat the young Italian to keep his hopes for
ATP Finals semifinal alive after
losing to Dominic Thiem in his first match. Both players started the match very patiently as we did not see any break point until 12th game. There it was one break point and set point at the same time for Federer. But he did not convert it and so tie-break needed to decide the first set. In the tie-break, Federer was almost flawless, winning it 7-2.
In the second set, Federer was more successful with break point conversion. He started the set with 4 straight points, breaking Berrettini's service game and earning important advantage over his opponent. Since that moment, the Swiss controlled the match. Although in 8th game, Berrettini had 3 break points, Federer turned all of them away to use his 2nd match point in next game. In his last group stage match at the ATP Finals, Federer will be facing Novak Djokovic.
