Dominic Thiem defeated Novak Djokovic in the longest match of 2019 Nitto ATP Finals in London 6-7, 6-3 and 7-6.
It was an important match for both of the players as they could get another step closer to reaching semifinals at the
ATP Finals. Both
Djokovic and
Thiem had one point after winning their first matches in the group stage.
World number two, Novak Djokovic, started the match better when he broke his opponent's service in the 4th game already. But Thiem was able to fight back and took his service back in the next game.
Any of the players was not able to break his opponent's serve in the first set anymore and so tie-break needed to decide. There it was Djokovic who was better and won it 7-5 to earn an imporant lead.
But Thiem did not give up and kept fighting in the second. He won first 3 games to earn a lead which he did not lose later in the set. He levelled the score by winning the second set 6-3.
Thiem stayed in a good rhythm in the 3rd set as well as he was winning already 3-1. But Djokovic won 3 games in a row to get the lead 4-3. After this turn of events, both players were able to hold their service games to love for some time. And it was
Dominic Thiem who was able to break Djokovic's serve in the 11th game. But Djokovic managed to break him back and so the match was decided in tie-break.
In the tie-break, it was Dominic Thiem who was better and won the match. Thiem earned 2nd point in the group stage after defeating also Federer previously.
