Feliciano Lopez achieved a major career milestone yesterday in Mallorca winning his 500th career match after a comeback win over Khachanov.
Lopez achieved the milestone on home soil in Mallorca in front of Spanish fans taking down Khachanov 4-6 6-2 6-4. It was a symbolic win for the veteran who is doing some amazing things in 2021. Lopez is one of the best grass-court players and achieving the milestone on grass was poetic.
He is also a 39-year old veteran who is still kicking around which is amazing to see especially considering this was a comeback win. Lopez lost the first set but never quit battling and he was able to outlast a much younger opponent.
Lopez said:
“More than the 500 wins, the important thing to me is the chance to keep playing in these kinds of tournaments and to keep being competitive. I didn’t expect to be able to play at the level I am on the ATP Tour at 40 years of age, which I will be in September.”
Lopez became only the 10th active player to win at least 500 matches joining some elite company. He also became the 7th Spanish player to cross 500 wins in the Open Era. A truly majestic career that is still going strong.
