Felix Auger-Aliassime got a chance to play one of his childhood idols in Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and the Canadian proved better 7-6(3) 6-2.
Auger-Aliassiem is continuing to play very good tennis after his maiden trophy run in Rotterdam last week. The Canadian took on Tsonga in R2 of the Open 13 Provence in Marseille and after a very close first set easily cruised in the 2nd. Auger played fairly well from the start. The serve was working and everything was fine with an early 4-1 lead.
After taking that initial lead, Auger complicated things by allowing Tsonga to battled back into the match. The Frenchman was showing a fairly solid forehand and it proved troublesome to overcome. We went into a tiebreak and Auger proved slightly better winning it 7-3. As the match went on Tsonga's level dropped off more and more and the Canadian was able to take control of the match.
It was pretty evident early on in the 2nd set that Tsonga gave everything in the first set but it ended up not being enough. In the 2nd set Auger completely cruised to finish off his idol 6-2. It is a solid performance for Tsonga but too little for Auger-Aliassime who has been one of the best players in 2022 so far. Another quarterfinal for the Canadian.
