Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli delivered a huge win for Italy beating Sock and Paul 6-4 6-4 in the doubles to lift the nation past the USA.
The US was a huge favourite not just in this matchup but also to win the event with two strong singles players and a competent doubles player. Many questioned why Ram was left off of the team after winning the ATP Finals with Salisbury again and considering the doubles decided it, it's even more interesting.
The crucial point came from Lorenzo Sonego who won against Tiafoe after playing some amazing tennis. Fritz expectedly defeated Musetti with the doubles deciding it. Bolelli and Fognini have been playing together all year long but they are not an elite team.
Neither are Paul and Sock despite being capable of playing good doubles. They simply came up short in the crucial moments. The served wasn't really there, there was barely any pressure on return and just overall a very poor showing. Italy moves on.
