Canada’s tennis star Bianca Andreescu has expressed disappointment after being crashed out from the first round of the Canadian Open. The 24-year-old lost in the opening round fixture to Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko with a score of 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The result was a disappointing one for Andreescu who started the competition high on confidence, especially after having won the title in 2019 and became the first Canadian to do so in 55 years. Talking after the match, Andreescu expressed her disappointment and stated that it ‘suck’ to have a result like that.
"I played some of my best tennis for the first set and a little bit," she said. "And then tennis just kicks you right in the butt sometimes. All I can really think about is how s----y I feel. I was feeling really great coming into the tournament, feeling my tennis really well. I don't want to be discouraged. For a match to just turn around like that, it sucks."
Andreescu came into the competition on the back of a rather disappointing campaign. Out of the three Grand Slams this year, she has only managed to play in one event which was the French Open. She ended up losing in the third round to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini with a score of 6-1, 3-6, 6-0. Andreescu broke onto the scene in 2019 when she lifted the US Open after beating the former world number one Serena Williams in straight with a score of 6-3, 7-6.
Since then, she has struggled to keep the consistency going. After that triumph in New York, the former world number four has failed to qualify in the quarterfinal of any event. Her best outing at a major event after that win came in the US Open in 2020 when she was eventually knocked out after losing in the fourth round to Greece Maria Sakkari with a score of 6-7, 7-6, 6-3.
