A new WTA
1000 event will take place at the Canadian Open, with Bianca Andreescu and
Leylah Fernandez as the main local stars. This year's tournament will be held
in Toronto, and the schedule for the night sessions of the first round is
already being outlined.
Despite
some withdrawals following the Olympic Games, including Iga Swiatek, Qinwen
Zheng, and Barbora Krejcikova, the tournament will feature most of the top-20
players, with Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka being the main title contenders.
Night Sessions at Canadian Open
As the
Canadian Open is about to commence, the organization has begun to define the
first-round schedule, particularly who will feature in the night sessions on
Center Court at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto.
The
qualifiers will conclude on Monday, finalizing the last players to enter the
main draw. However, the night session matches have already been decided, with
local players taking center stage.
On Tuesday,
the 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu will take to the court in her first
hardcourt tournament since the 2023 Canadian Open. The former US Open champion
has recovered from an injury that kept her out of competition for 10 months and
is looking to regain her top form. She will face Lesia Tsurenko, against whom
she has a 0-2 head-to-head record.
On
Wednesday, another Canadian, Leylah Fernandez, will take the spotlight. The
world No. 25 has had limited success at the tournament with just three wins and
four losses, but this year she arrives with more confidence after solidifying
her position as a top-30 player and a formidable opponent for anyone. She will
debut against Shuai Zhang (No. 685), who has not won a WTA match since January
2023.
Thursday
will see the second-round matches, where the top seeds will begin their
campaigns. World No. 3 Aryna Sabalenka will headline the night session on
Center Court on Thursday. She does not yet know her opponent, as she awaits the
winner of the match between Cristina Bucsa and Yue Yuan.
