Former professional tennis player Jimmy Arias expressed his opinion that Carlos Alcaraz is better than the rest of the players.
Former world No. 5, discussed the current state of the men's tour on the Tennis Channel Inside-In Podcast and highlighted Alcaraz's performance over the past year. According to Jiimmy Arias, the 19-year-old Spaniard has reached a higher level than any other player in the past and present.
Alcaraz's recent victory at SW19, where he defeated 7-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic in the final, impressed the tennis world. This achievement is remarkable considering Alcaraz's limited experience in grass court tournaments and Djokovic's outstanding form during the tournament.
By winning Wimbledon, Alcaraz ended Djokovic's streak of four consecutive titles at the prestigious event and handed him his first defeat on the Centre Court in 10 years. In Arias's view, when Alcaraz is at his best, he is a better tennis player than Djokovic.
"Before the Wimbledon final, a couple of people asked me and I said and this maybe sounds crazy, but he at his best level is better than anybody else. He is better than Djokovic," claimed Arias.
The previous encounter between Alcaraz and Djokovic (Novak Djokovic) was in the semifinals of the 2023 French Open. In that match, although Alcaraz won the second set, he struggled physically and faced clear physical issues, ultimately resulting in a victory for Djokovic with a scoreline of 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.
Jimmy Arias commented on Alcaraz's ability to bounce back from the pressure just a few weeks after the tough defeat:
"I didn't know if he was going to bring it in a Wimbledon final against Djokovic. But I did also know he'll be more relaxed than when he was at the French. The French Open was a strange situation for him because playing at the time a 22-time Grand Slam champion and he is the favorite, I thought that was a strange mental hurdle for him. The Wimbledon final was the other way."
World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz will face his next challenge at the Masters 1000 Canadian Open, where he is the top seed and has the opportunity to earn significant points to extend his lead over Djokovic at the top of the rankings. World No. 2 will not be participating in the tournament, giving Alcaraz a chance to solidify his position as the world's number one player.
