Roberto Bautista Agut has unexpectedly brought his professional tennis career to an end, announcing his retirement weeks after revealing that he planned to compete until the conclusion of the 2026 season. The former world No. 9 surprised the tennis world by confirming that the Copa del Rey de Tenis in Huelva would be his final event as a professional player.
The 38-year-old Spaniard had originally planned to finish the season on tour, but after his participation in the historic Spanish exhibition tournament, he decided to close the curtain on a career that included 12 ATP titles, a Wimbledon semifinal appearance and a key role in Spain’s 2019 Davis Cup triumph.
Bautista Agut’s final match in an official ATP tournament came at Wimbledon, where he faced rising Brazilian star Joao Fonseca in the first round on June 29. Few could have imagined at the time that his defeat at the All England Club would become the final chapter of one of the most consistent careers of his generation.
The announcement came after a tribute ceremony in Huelva, where Bautista Agut stood on court alongside his wife and children before confirming that he had played his last match. His farewell transformed the Copa del Rey de Tenis into the stage for the retirement of one of Spanish tennis’ most respected figures.

After receiving recognition for his career, Bautista Agut shared the news through social media, explaining that the tournament in Spain represented the perfect place to end his journey.
“The Copa del Rey Tennis Tournament has been my last event as a professional,” Bautista Agut wrote. “I was thrilled that it would be in Spain, and this iconic tournament was the perfect stage to bid farewell.”
The Spaniard also thanked everyone who supported him throughout his career and highlighted what tennis had given him throughout more than a decade competing at the highest level. “Grateful to those of you who have been with me on this journey and to tennis for everything it has given me,” he added.

A career defined by consistency among tennis’ elite

Bautista Agut leaves professional tennis after establishing himself as one of the most reliable players of the modern era. He reached a career-high ranking of world No. 9 in 2019, a remarkable achievement during a period dominated by the Big Three and the emergence of a new generation of elite players.
That same season represented the peak of his career. Bautista Agut reached the Wimbledon semifinals, his best Grand Slam result, before helping Spain win the Davis Cup title in Madrid. In the final against Canada, he defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime, while Rafael Nadal secured the decisive victory over Denis Shapovalov.
The Spaniard finished his career with 12 ATP singles titles, including the Doha ATP 500 trophy, and reached a Masters 1000 final at the 2016 Shanghai Masters. His game was built around consistency, movement and his ability to frustrate some of the biggest names on tour.
Bautista Agut also recorded three victories against Novak Djokovic, including two Masters 1000 wins and a straight-sets victory on route to his first ATP 500 title in Doha. His longevity and professionalism made him one of the most respected competitors on the ATP Tour.
With his unexpected retirement, Bautista Agut closes a career that exceeded 500 ATP wins and established him as one of Spain’s greatest players outside the country’s most famous generation.
